Built in 1867 by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy English surgeon, businessman and MP, the Henry’s built this beautiful castle, gardens and church during their time on the estate. Despite being struck by tragedy more than once, the Henry family enjoyed the estate as their Summer home for almost 36 years after which it was sold to the fashionable Duke and Duchess of Manchester. The Duke and Duchess weren’t to live in Kylemore long and after just seven years put the estate up for sale. In 1920 the Benedictine Community of Nuns arrived from war torn Ypres and fell in love with Kylemore. For the past 100 years they have lived, prayed and worked in Kylemore, over the running a guesthouse, an international boarding school and now running an international visitor attraction.
