Steve is a geologist and archaeologist with over 25 years’ experience teaching the Irish landscape at all levels from primary school to university graduate students. He uses a fun, interactive and hands-on approach to make learning about history and archaeology fun for the children. Steve is a founding director of Dig it Kids, offering school programmes, educational camps, museum programmes and special events that include outdoor exploring. Dig it Kids also provides training workshops for schoolteachers and childcare workers, giving advice and practical guidance on bringing archaeology and history to life for children. Stephen works with fellow HIS expert and co-founder of Dig it Kids Lisanne O’Loughlin to deliver HIS visits Dig it Kids offer a wide range of topics by combining fun facts, craft and story, from the Stone age to modern history, in school and virtually.

SCHOOL VISITS (VIRTUAL)

Dig it Kids have four different virtual programmes for you to pick from during this free pilot project to schools.

Virtual Topic 1: The Secrets of Irish Ringforts

Description: The Irish landscape has the remains of 45,000 ringforts. This virtual school programme suitable for 2nd – 6th Class. primary ages will uncover the secrets of everyday life in a ringfort. Children will each make a model of a stone ringfort (cashel).

Virtual Topic 2: Round Towers in Early Christian Ireland

In Early Christian times monasteries flourished throughout the county. This programme will peek into life in the monastery. Children will make models of a round tower and learn the engineering skills behind these remarkable structures. An engaging story reveals how the monks played an important role in spreading literacy. Suitable for 1st – 6th Class.

Virtual Topic 3: Celtic Art in Medieval Ireland – St Columbkille

Learn the story of St Columcille and the development of Celtic illuminated manuscripts. This fun and engaging history programme is tailored to suit junior and senior classes, comprising captivating videos, and learning step by step how to do Celtic art. Children will create their own illustrated Celtic letter (their initial). An original story will bring to life the story of how the Irish monasteries saved the abundant body of Irish Myths and Legends.

Virtual Topic 4: Title: Heraldry and Anglo Norman Shields

What are family crests all about? What do the symbols represent? Children will make their own knights shields, representing values which are important to them. This programme is suitable for 1st – 4th class. Our Story is an exciting knight’s tale – which children can vigorously participate in.

Format for online virtual visits

Stage 1: Pre-recorded video (20-30 mins)

The video presents the subject topic using fun and engaging facts, interactive quizzes for children to answer, and opportunities for lesson expansion including discussion, and local research.

Stage 2: Virtual online class session (c. 1 hour)

During this class, each child will be led step by step to make their own models/art. This craft is tailored to be suitable to the class level. The children will enjoy a historical story and discover the secrets of what life was like in the past. The Dig it Kids team have a contagious love of archaeology so the children have lots of opportunity to ask questions and will gain important insights into life in Ireland in the past and connect this knowledge to real world visits to local ancient monuments.

Resources to be provided

The virtual sessions are made simple by the effective Dig it Kids team, who will lead the session and provide ample opportunity for engagement by the children. To supplement the pre-recorded video, FAQ worksheets and a relevant further topic information sheet will be supplied through the teacher resource pack. Straight-forward craft instructions with images will be given in advance to the teacher so that they will be able to assist the children in making the craft during the live virtual session.

List of materials classes will need (if appropriate)

A comprehensive list of required materials required to make the craft will be given in advance to the school / teachers so they can prepare for the activity. Craft materials are standard stationary items such as coloured pencils, and glue. Templates for the craft will be given in A4 format so that they can be printed out in advance.
