Shazia Waheed is a qualified marine biologist and zoologist with a passion for sharing her knowledge and experiences of the ocean and Ireland’s wildlife. She has worked in science communication and outreach with primary schools in Cork City and county since 2016, with Lifetime Lab @ Old Cork Waterworks, delivering ocean themed workshops as part of the Explorers Education Programme and also SEAI sustainable energy workshops. Shazia has designed and partaken in many activities and stands for science events over the years including SeaFest, Cork Carnival of Science, and Cork Science Festival.

As a keen snorkeller, birdwatcher, moth-trapper, fossil collector and amateur photographer, Shazia has a wide knowledge base on most aspects of Ireland’s natural history and loves to share her wildlife experiences. She is a firm believer that children should experience nature from a young age so they develop an appreciation and sense of responsibility for our environment, as she did herself growing up. Students will be guided in their search for and interpretation of nature within schools grounds or other local habitats, such as a woodlands, ponds, streams or seashores. In addition, Shazia brings natural history to the classroom from both above and below the water through her videos, photos and specimen collection, while also keeping children engaged with games and quizzes.

Shazia explores what biodiversity is, its importance, threats to biodiversity and ways we can help improve biodiversity. The workshop can be classroom based or outdoors, but ideally both! Outdoors, children will be guided to identify habitats in search of minibeasts as well as native flowers and birds. In class, workshops will combine a visual PowerPoint, games, quizzes and video clips to keep things fun and engaging. Shazia will also introduce children to the concept of ‘citizen science’, from her own perspective as a moth-trapper and recorder (with the possibility of displaying live specimens – season and weather dependent).

Shazia will introduce students to the sealife to be found around the Irish coast with a variety of specimens to show and tell, video clips from her snorkelling adventures and a visual PowerPoint discussing why the ocean is important through the seven key ocean literacy principles. Shazia can also facilitate a seashore safari of a suitable rocky shore and lead the students on a rock pooling expedition to find and identify a wide range of species in their natural habitat. Workshops will conclude with a discussion on threats to the ocean and ways we can all help as individuals.
