Ross runs Free Range Outdoor Education www.froe.ie . He is a certified and experienced Forest School Leader and Bushcraft Instructor. He specialises in outdoor education, teaching woodland conservation and management, tree and plant identification. He teaches ancient outdoor skills and natural history such as foraging as our ancestors did and traditional green woodworking such as spoon carving. He also specialises in willow and weaving craft activities such as building living willow structures, natural crafts such as weaving, cob making and building. He teaches about native animals and trees through games, stories and exploring.

This session teaches about the world around us that more often isn't noticed or known. The importance of native flora and its role in biodiversity, what’s safe and what isn’t safe, traditional food and medicinal uses.

We would make natural wildflower seed bombs either using seeds we have gathered or native seeds that I would bring along depending on the season / location. If the location isn’t hugely suitable for a long walk, I would incorporate Hapa Zome art into the session using flora we had sustainably gathered and recycled cloth. The children would be encouraged to take their art home and frame it or place in a book.

For younger classes building a living willow 'fedge’ or play tunnel and a talk about the sustainability of using willow and its important role within the biodiversity of an area. The children would plant whips and weave the structure. Along the same theme but with older class ages we would weave a small basket or a fish and talk about the sustainability of using willow and its important role within the biodiversity of an area.

The four main aspects are fire, shelter, water and food. Bug hunts, nature scavenger hunts, nature connection games and activities, safe and simple use of tools, fire skills and fire lighting.
