Book in-person visit

As a professional mosaicist, I offer engaging insight into the art of mosaic tailored to connect students with the rich heritage of mosaics in Ireland. Where possible, I lead guided tours of local mosaics, and in particular ecclesiastical mosaics sharing their stories and artistic significance. In addition, I bring the history to life in the classroom, offering hands-on insights into traditional materials, techniques, and designs used in the mosaics.

Drawing inspiration from Ireland’s own rich patterns—Celtic knots, medieval motifs, ancient geometric design, patchwork, even patterns in nature, students can discover the cultural connections and artistic legacy mosaics hold. This interactive experience combines creativity, history, and heritage, inspiring a deeper appreciation of mosaic art, and the stories it tells.

This session commences with a brief and general outline of mosaic art but specifically its role in Irish heritage. Following this the class will have a “show and tell” demonstration of some of the tools and materials used along with the different techniques and how they have changed over time.

Students will then have the opportunity to create their own “temporary” piece of mosaic art using items found in nature, pre cut tiles and recycled materials. This will allow them the opportunity to explore Irish patterns, Irish symbols (spirals, knots or local motifs).

The session is both interactive and informative where the class learn mosaic techniques as well as the role of mosaic art in Ireland’s rich heritage. Worksheets will be provided.

Visit a local mosaic installation (church, public building or community art piece), where a guided exploration of the mosaic’s history is given, it’s meaning, and technique used. Children will be challenged to “spot the details”, identifying motifs, materials and patterns.

This will be followed by a “sketching session” either on the site of the mosaic installation or on return to the classroom, inspired by the mosaic installation which they have visited. In this way the students will connect Irish Mosaic Heritage to physical artwork and will understand its cultural relevance.
