Luana Jungmann is a marine conservationist and environmental educator who traveled the world to discover different cultures and dealt with a variety of marine conservation topics. Her marine biology and teaching background inspired the creation of a concept that could meet the increasing demand to pass on the information collected by scientists to the public in a pedagogical and funny way.
This workshop on marine mammals is a great opportunity for participants to learn about their marine environment, the diversity and abundance of marine mammal species in Ireland, to understand conservation issues and solutions, and to be direct guardians of this precious Irish heritage. The activities are based on local and international research and provide children with basic scientific skills with some activities taking place outdoors in order to provide an in-situ experience.
The primary goal of this project is to bring a sense of wonder and excitement about the ocean to participants in the hope that they will feel inspired to become leaders in marine conservation efforts.
In-person school visit
This interactive introduction will summarise the different types of marine mammals, how important they are in the food chain, how they evolved and a few videos to demonstrate their hunting techniques.
This activity is based on the scientific research done with the Shannon dolphins and helps children undertand how to identify each animal based on their dorsal fin marks and fluke marks for whales.
The students will be able to play a few game to understand how these animals communicate through ecolocation and whistles.
When possible and on site, we will be going through the steps one has to take when facing a beached whale or dolphin. The children will simulate the situation with an inflatable dolphin and will learn the right behavior.
"Luana is passionate above marine biology and shared this passion beautifully with the students and engaged them very well." - Sylane NS, Galway
"Luana was a thoroughly engaging and enthusiastic host who was quickly able to foster a meaningful raport with the children. The content was of high interest to the students and was supported with great resources. The interactive games she played with the children were highly active, challenged their ideas and prompted discussion. I would have no hesitation in recommending Luana to another school or to welcome her back for another visit." - Galway Education Together N.S.
"The pupils loved it . One comment was: ' I wish all the visitors to our school could make things nice and uncomplicated , like Launa '.
