Liz Tiernan runs Sweet Wild Soul, delivering educational sessions and events relating to our natural environment. She has facilitated events for Biodiversity Week, Heritage Week and for local libraries. She has a science degree and with her Forest School background, she has years of experience working with children of all ages in nature connection.

A session specifically regarding our native Irish trees. This involves an interactive talk with exploration outside then. Children will hear all about trees and how wonderful they are. I show children how we are similar to trees and I go through what a native Irish tree is with a timeline in history and a species list. We then go explore the school grounds or locality and find and identify the trees there, with an activity sheet for connection with the trees and some art.

I can come to the school for a customised session specifically regarding a local habitat to explore, for example a local woodland, bog, seashore or rewilded area you have. This can be very hands-on with leaf identification, meeting bugs, birdwatching and recording, pond dipping, seashell collecting and identifying. We will talk about, identify and investigate the local biodiversity, exploring what we can do for nature.

Testimonials

  • "Liz was so knowledgeable and has a genuine warmth about her and the children really responded to that. Her resources were fantastic and the hands on nature of the session was particularly engaging. The children were disappointed when their sessions finished up, they could have stayed with Liz for the whole day!" - Esker ETNS, Dublin
  • "We were delighted to welcome Liz Tiernan to our school for her workshop all about native Irish trees. The children really enjoyed the session and especially loved the outdoor exploration aspect where they had the opportunity to go outside, observe and identify trees around the school grounds. Liz shared a huge amount of knowledge and passion about nature and trees, and it was lovely for the children to learn more about the importance of native Irish trees and our natural environment. The interactive elements, discussion and creative activities helped to keep the children engaged throughout the workshop. The outdoor activities and opportunities for hands-on learning were particularly enjoyable for the pupils and allowed them to connect with nature in a meaningful way. Liz created a calm and positive atmosphere and encouraged the children to observe and appreciate the natural world around them. At times, some of the information and concepts may have gone slightly over the heads of the younger children, however they still thoroughly enjoyed the experience overall and benefited greatly from the interactive and outdoor elements of the workshop. Thank you, Liz, for an enjoyable and informative visit to our school." - Harold's Cross NS, Dublin
