As an internationally known LEGO Brick Artist, Jessica Farrell participates in exhibitions, community projects and interactive events. A great part of her work involves facilitating hands-on, educational workshops for children of all ages in public libraries, museums and schools throughout the country.

Jessica is also a qualified horticulturist and beekeeper with an extensive background in biodiversity and sustainable communities.

Jessica collaborates with The Heritage Council on the annual Heritage at Play LEGO brick project which invites children to explore our natural, cultural & built heritage through creative expression. During her classroom visits, Jessica expands on this theme using the universal language of LEGO bricks to start a fun-filled conversation about Irish heritage and spark a level of interest and enthusiasm in young people so that they are receptive to learning more in the future. Through the simple joy of play, children discover and choose for themselves the relevance of the myriad examples of our collective heritage and get the opportunity to consider their local environment in an exciting, new way.

All LEGO bricks provided for visits.

The importance of our native pollinators is explored during hands-on activities where the children build custom-designed models of Irish bee and butterfly species. There is open discussion about the vital link between pollinators and wildflowers; children are asked to suggest how wildflowers may flourish in their locality. After discussion, the class gets creative and collectively builds a “field of flowers”, in which to place a wild variety of insects!

The session starts with children building custom-designed models depicting well-known examples of Irish built heritage. There is open discussion about the built environment, our place within it and why we preserve and protect historical structures. The class is asked to suggest some local examples and then, in groups, children recreate these in an imaginative way using the LEGO bricks and figures provided. The resulting creations are shared in a fun “show and tell”.

In small groups, children build custom models which represent aspects of Irish culture whilst learning the importance and value of the topics through open discussion. This is followed by a classroom activity where local cultural heritage that is meaningful to the children is suggested; that meaning is then creatively expressed by the children using the assorted LEGO bricks provided.
