Jenny is an experienced ESL teacher, wildcrafter, and apprentice clinical herbalist who has been leading plant walks at Sonairte in County Meath since 2022. Jenny’s work through Heritage in Schools aims to enable primary school students to get to know their natural environment by observing plant shapes and colours and learning to identify the plants as they change through the seasons and their life cycles. We introduce the different plant families and students learn how to place plants in their different categories. We also look at the plants mentioned in Irish mythologies to understand the personalities of plants and the roles that they have played in our individual and collective lives.

In this session, students will be introduced to basic plant identification skills through the direct observation of plants in their natural habitat (Jenny will bring in samples if there is no garden or natural area near the school) to highlight their main characteristics. Students will also draw and create artworks based on their observations and will learn what kind of habitat the plants live in, what kind of food they need, and what shelter and food they provide to animals to gain an understanding of their place in the ecosystem.
