Ellie McEwan established Elemental Outdoor Learning with the main aim of connecting children with their natural world for their mutual benefit. As a trained and experienced Forest School leader, Ellie specialises in delivering programs of regular outdoor sessions that follow children’s interests and needs, building on their skills and abilities from session to session. Hands-on experiences that take advantage of what each season has to offer help to instill a deep understanding and love of nature in children, awakening their awe and wonder in the natural world.

Sessions can include games and activities that help children learn about the flora and fauna in their local environment, natural arts and crafts (including the use of tools), community/team building games, wild food foraging and fire. Sessions are tailored to the needs of the class and location. Ellie offers workshops tailored to specific themes such as supporting native biodiversity and exploring Celtic seasonal celebrations. Bespoke workshops can be planned based on school curriculum focus and class interests.

Regular sessions are planned to effectively support children’s development by responding and adapting to their needs and interests from session to session. Opening and closing with a circle gathering using a song and/or story, sessions will include games, art and craft activities and free play in nature. (These can be booked as a series of one-off sessions or (subject to availability) as a program of 6 sessions for the same 15 children).

Fun, hands on activities will focus on native fauna and flora.

  • What is present: Scavenger hunts, bird/bee counts, bug safaris, etc.
  • What has been lost: Looking at biodiversity stripes and other visual aids.
  • What can we do: Bug hotels, mini-nature reserves, bird feeders, butterfly gardens, etc.

Linking in with the time of year, the focused workshop will explore one of the main quarter or cross-quarter Celtic festivals; Samhain (Celtic New Year), Winter Solstice (Yule), Imbolc (St Brigid’s Day), Spring Equinox (Ostara), Beltane (May Day), Summer Solstice (Litha/midsummer/St John’s), Lughnasa (harvest) and Autumn Equinox (Mabon).

The session will include storytelling of the folktale/legend connected with the celebration, the festival through history, associated Ogham tree and alphabet symbol and art/craft activity for children to keep.
