Book in-person visit

Carmel Madigan is an artist, natural researcher and author of two natural history books on flora and marine biodiversity.

She provides outdoor exploring visits to the local seashore, marine presentations and associated hands on learning activities. She provides a historical, navigational, natural, storied and current presentation entitled: 'Discovering the Shannon Estuary', combined with OSI mapping activities and Icon drawing and OSI map legend reading. She provides explorative outdoor visits around the school green areas or on a quiet country road/local bog to discover the natural colours of the flora and hedgerows, colour mapping habitats and designing growth charts for some species of common plants. She provides sea shell exhibitions, and nature quizzes.

This is a highly interactive activity suitable for 3rd to 6th classes – with the aim of drawing and labelling the core elements of various species, including fish, sea creatures, seaweeds and flora. At the same time there is an exchange of information about each species. Children are given just 2-3 minutes to draw and colour each species and a quiz at the end to keep the children tuned into the information.

A day out at your local seashore, to explore and study its inhabitants. Who lives on rocks? Who moves around freely? What are the interdependencies between species? Who eats who?, A wonderful scientific investigation followed by some rock or sand art. Suitable for 3rd to 6th classes.

Field trips to collect wild flora and make leaf books identifying each species on each page. Children will need their own copies and pritt sticks for this. Walks suitable around perimeter of school or quiet lane nearby.

On-site visits to showcase species in a tactile way, an exhibition of seashells from around the world, a discussion around each shell and shells in general. Alternatively an exhibition of wild flora or possibly seaweed, with chats and discussions on each – suitable for 1st to 5th classes

A historical, navigational, natural, storied and current presentation entitled: 'Discovering the Shannon Estuary', combined with OSI mapping activities and Icon drawing and OSI map legend reading.
