Mary has been crocheting for over 20 years but only discovered the historical importance of Irish crochet lace in recent years. Finding out that after the Great Famine the townland next to hers was hugely significant in developing crochet lace in Ireland, ignited her interest in the historical story of lace as well as the craft itself.

Mary, a qualified SNA, combines her crafting interests with her enjoyment of working with children. The children will engage with the story of lace in an interactive way. Questioning what life was like for children of their age in the mid 1800’s, and exploring how families and communities worked together to tackle the changing environment they endured. What opportunities and restrictions existed in those days and how did people respond?

But the story is a real rollercoaster going from famine to fine fabrics in less than 10 years, and within another 50 years being almost non-existent as an economic entity.
