Working in nature connects me to my environment in a very positive and dynamic way. This close connection has led me to develop my environmental and scientific knowledge. With my background as an educator it is a natural step to share that knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Fostering informed connection to our natural environment is a very important step in supporting our young people to be the nature keepers of the future.

Why peatlands matter, the unique role they can play in our future and how everyone can help are important and powerful messages for younger people to get - young people who are often concerned about climate change.

Abbeyleix Bog is a small and accessible bog with some great examples of diverse habitats, biodiversity and wildlife. The dynamic peatlands conservation work taking place is a great example of how nature can be restored.

The boardwalk trail across the raised bog is an opportunity to learn about how bogs are formed and about the wildlife that makes the bog unique.

At the bog’s dipping pond young visitors experience for themselves the joy of working hands-on as scientists - collecting, identifying and gaining a deeper understanding of the wetland’s wildlife

Teistiméireachtaí

  • "This is what it's all about, I'd imagine. We visited Abbeyleix Bog, which is almost right on our doorstep, which many of the children had visited before. Except this visit was different, as we were brought around the bog by someone with a genuine passion for the ammenity. Fiona's tour was excellent, she was so engaging and had everything so well planned. There was a great mixture of sharing of information, hands-on investigations and then at other times she was just happy to let the children bask in their surroundings. An excellent trip, and we really hope to do the same next year. Sincere thanks to all who make these visits possible." - Our Lady's Meadow NS, Durrow
