Anne is an experienced primary teacher with a lifelong passion for geology, archaeology, history, heritage and the environment. She has gained further qualifications in these areas through various university courses. Anne has a thorough knowledge of the SESE curriculum strands and will work with the school to plan the needs of each class. Visits can incorporate visits to local sites of geological, archaeological historical or environmental interest.

Geology of the local area – identifying the rocks types of the area and their uses in building megalithic tombs, fences, local buildings etc. How these rocks were formed (igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary). What would my area have looked like millions of years ago and the formation of mountains. Identifying the mountains and hills of the area today. The Ice Age and how rivers, lakes and hills were formed and plants began to colonise. How plants, animals and humans colonized the landscape. The format of the visit can vary in consultation with individual schools but an outdoor element is recommended. There will be an introductory interactive presentation with samples of various rock types. Worksheets will also be available.

In this topic the children will be guided through the history and heritage of their local area from neolithic times to the recent past. Through the use of historic maps, placenames, stories and interactive sources the children are guided through each century. Local archaeological and historic monuments are studied. We identify local placenames and speculate on their origin. The session would preferably include a field trip to a local historic site/s eg a ringfort, wedge tomb etc.

This topic covers the flora and fauna of the locality. Children learn about the birds, animals and minibeasts and flora in their area. We distinguish between native and introduced species and learn the importance to biodiversity of encouraging native plants and animals.

Anne is also available to lead field trips to a local woodland, boglands or other area of special conservation. Children will also be given the opportunity to continue their exploration of Irish Wildlife and heritage by exploring the many online resources available for this topic.
