Áine has been teaching about biodiversity and nature education for many years, she is passionate about Ireland’s natural, built and agricultural heritage and encourages children and teachers to engage with nature.

Áine was the Education Coordinator for Irish Seed Savers for fifteen years, she developed a wide range of education programmes, hosted school groups, organised and facilitated nature camps and the wild life school gardening summer courses for teachers. She is one of the authors of The Year Round Organic School Garden book, a gardening and nature resource for schools. She is a qualified field ecologist, Forest School Leader, organic horticulturist and she has a MSc in Biodiversity and Land Use Planning.

In-person school visits

Áine will help the school plan, assess and develop a heritage school garden using a biodiversity wish list of projects that can be implemented over time: heritage vegetables, herb, flower and fruit beds; native hedgerows; a small woodland; a heritage orchard; pond; beneficial pollinator habitats and actions; native wild flower grassland/meadow, native wild plant and seed nursery/bank; polytunnel; and composting.

Using outdoor nature activities to engage the students with their outdoor environment and to identify the existing nature on their doorstep.

Using practical outdoor ecology methods and nature actions for biodiversity, Áine and the children will assess the school grounds with the aim to establish a wider biodiversity plan for the outdoor school environment. She will help them identify existing beneficial features and identify native plants and suitable areas in the school grounds for the development of practical biodiversity projects.

Áine will introduce the group to simple actions a school can carry out to support the year round pollinator’s needs – nesting, foraging, larval host plants, and hibernation, shelter and flight paths and establishing a safe pesticide free environment. This workshop will include assessing the school grounds with the children to establish a year round pollinator plan.

An introduction to Ireland’s precious pollinator species, why they are in decline, how to support their needs in a school environment and a look at the link between the loss of semi-natural grassland habitats and the decline of pollinator species.
