Carmel explores the power of language, good storytelling, and how to develop the vivid imagination of younger readers through her simple stories, all relatable to the everyday experiences of young children. As the children identify with Carmel’s characters, they too become storytellers. Through her vast knowledge of research and writing skills Carmel enables primary school pupils to become historians within their own families and communities. Young curious minds love the challenge of investigating new topics and Carmel gives instructions on the best way to do this.

She uses some of the five titles in her Irish History Centenary series to demonstrate the culmination of her own research and writing experience. Her forte is connecting local communities to wider national events.

Based on Carmel's books ‘Fr William Doyle SJ’ and ‘RMS Leinster The Forgotten Tragedy', focusing mainly on 1917 and 1918 and showing local connections to all areas of Ireland.

Eras of change and conflict and change, discover how people lived and why and how the war happened and the impact of the war on Irish life.

One or both books can be used and the session modified to the ages of the children.

Anna Haslam-Quaker and pioneering suffragettes is based on Carmel's book. Anna Haslam lived from 1829-1922.
