From the classroom to the Arctic

Heritage in Schools Specialist Anthony Galvin-Healy has just returned from trekking across the top of Europe. Anthony, who visits schools talking about polar heroes Tom Crean and Ernest Shackleton, has been a regular visitor to the Arctic over the past three decades. This time he was trekking across the extreme north of Finland, in temperatures of minus 23 degrees, to raise funds for the charity SightSavers, which provides medical care in the developing world.
The group of cross-country skiers, from all over Ireland, covered 12 to 14km a day, towing pulks, or sleds, behind them. They raised more than E78,000 for the charity.
Anthony then went straight from the cold to the heat, travelling to Marrakech to take part in the International Storytelling Festival. He was part of a team of Seanachaís from all over the world who broke the Guinness World Record for the longest storytelling session at the festival.
