The general characteristics of birds will be discussed and a range of common Irish wild birds will be identified by their colour and shape. The reasons why some birds move back and forward across the world (migration patterns) are discussed and linked to the geographical elements of the SESE curriculum. The class will use an App to listen for and identify individual bird sounds heard in the school yard. Classes will then be tasked with gathering data through the year and identifying changing patterns and species as the seasons change each year. How to prevent disease spread (biosecurity) from wild birds to Irish domestic poultry farms will also be discussed.

Seasonal bird migratory patterns and the effect of weather will be discussed. Changes in migration patterns due to climate change will also be discussed and can be monitored by collection of data. Using a bird identification App, the class can participate by identifying local birds through sounds heard in their school-yard throughout the year.

One Health recognises that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals and the wider environment are interdependent. In this approach medical and veterinary professionals, and environmentalists work together. We collaborate to identify and mitigate the risk of disease spread from animals to humans as habitats are changing and biodiversity lost due to climate change.
