Michael guides the children in the production of a web-based heritage map of their locality, the page is displayed on a website with lots of other schools heritage maps. The map contains images, video and text relating to the heritage of the area stories from people in the community, the site of a holy well, an old route to school, an old forge etc. Over the course of three or five days (depending on school's budget or timeframe), Michael discusses the local history, folklore, landscape and built heritage of the locality with the class.
If feasible, field trips will be undertaken to nearby sites where a local person is filmed by the pupils giving an account about the place. Michael supplies all equipment during workshops and is highly experienced in working in film and editing with young people. For the past decade Michael Fortune has championed the use of new media such as film, digital photography and web design in the promotion of community and place. Michael is a lecturer with the Limerick School of Art where he focuses on the use of new media in the classroom setting.
