Martina provides nature discovery workshops based on the SESE curriculum and Green Schools biodiversity themes. Workshops can take place in the school grounds or in an alternative habitat. Each workshop can be of 1, 1½ or 2 hours duration depending on pupil needs and the school timetable. Each session starts with a short introduction indoors followed by the group exploring nature outside and ends with a fun review activity.

Martina has created and presented her very popular range of Heritage in Schools Scheme workshops for many years. She also provided similar workshops on behalf of Discover Primary Science, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and continues to provide them on behalf of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford local authorities. She has also designed and presented a variety of teacher in-service and summer courses on behalf of the Department of Education.

A general introduction to native plants, mini-beasts, animals, habitats and their conservation. Printable copies of simple plant and animal identification sheets used during this workshop will be provided for schools to continue to use with their pupils in future.

An exploration of the amazing little creatures, living in your school grounds. Children can learn how to make their own small bug house from recycled materials as part of this workshop.

Discover our native trees and their importance in our landscape (learn how to plant a tree as part of this workshop during the dormant season from Autumn until early Spring).

Map, plan and do for biodiversity in your own school grounds.

Learn about how plants make their own food and fuel and how this effects habitats and climate change.

Examine sea or freshwater plants that I can bring into your school as part of this workshop.

Schools can opt to visit an approved bog, seashore, river bank, hedgerow or woodland habitat as part of a Heritage in Schools workshop.

  • "Martina infused enthusiasm, energy and great interest in equal measures in our biodiversity workshop today where we firstly viewed and discussed an interactive presentation in the classroom, followed by a field trip to our local Lough Arrow SPA. There we explored the indigenous flora and fauna of the lakeshore, learning so much through Martina's expertise. With pooters, containers and nets we examined and learned the names of a plethora of minibeasts. Returning to the classroom we were able to relate to and appreciate the interconnectedness of all the life form, both plant and animal, which we had just observed at close quarters. Today's workshop was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for students and teachers alike, thanks to Martina. Go raibh maith agat!"
