Lorraine offers engaging, hands-on workshops based on the SESE curriculum and Green Schools biodiversity themes. Lorraine’s workshops link science and nature, using exhibits to stimulate the children’s curiosity about the range of biodiversity in ponds, streams and rivers. These workshops take place in the classroom, school grounds, school garden or in the locality if feasible, and would be especially suitable for schools that are working on their Biodiversity flag. Lorraine offers two different half-day workshops for schools to choose from:

In the water biodiversity workshop children will examine collections of freshwater samples to discover the minibeasts that live there. Children can examine these samples under a digital microscope and learn why these insects are important, before releasing them back to their environment. This hands-on activity can be combined with an optional field trip (if feasible) to a local water habitat. Here the children will be introduced to basic sampling techniques and investigate water quality by identifying what kind of creatures live there.

In the freshwater ecology workshop children will learn about the variety of creatures that live in freshwater ecosystems, from invertebrates and fish to birds and animals. Lorraine will use live exhibits and her taxidermy collection to demonstrate what the creatures look like, and children will get to examine these exhibits close-up. This workshop will demonstrate how freshwater creatures depend on each other to survive in this unique habitat.
