John D Ruddy is a YouTuber, actor, illustrator and historian to name but a few things. He is the creator of the animated YouTube series Manny Man Does History making history as fun and accessible as possible for millions of people around the world. He has adapted this series into a series of books and indeed a stage play Manny Man Does the History of Ireland On Stage which is a roller coaster ride through Irish History in 70 minutes.

John studied Education in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra and worked as a Primary School Teacher for several years. Now he is bringing history to life in classrooms both on the screen and in person.

His history workshops vary depending on the need of the class. They can be focused history talks based on a particular topic such as The Easter Rising; they can be fieldtrip-based history talks, exploring local historical sites and allowing children to use the clues of the past to visualise what once was. A very popular workshop he does is the evolution of weapons and warfare over the centuries, focusing on the changing technology and how it relates to our understanding today. He uses specially designed model weapons based on the style of his YouTube series.

These history talks can be combined with illustration workshops in which he brings the group through the process of drawing particular historical figures and costumes, allowing them to explore the fine details often overlooked. He loves bringing history to life in the classroom (and sometimes the novelty of having a YouTuber in the class can be fun!).
