John’s visits will involve indoor and outdoor SESE curriculum-based activities relating to archaeology and local history. John’s approach is to involve the children as active learners in bringing to life their local heritage. Students will be guided through activities to explore their local area. Interactive and hands-on activities will be used to provoke discussion and to discover how people lived in the past and to draw connections between ancient lifestyles and the children’s everyday world.

The visit can include a range of agreed activities:

  • guided walks to explore their local landscape and to learn news ways to look at the age of buildings, how they were built, and used, and the materials they are built from (and where it all comes from)
  • exploring their daily routine, objects and familiar activities to learn about how children (and adults) experienced life long ago
  • integrating further teacher-led school-based activities such as creating artwork or written work to sustain their learning
