Heather is a lifelong birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast. She brings a variety of living things in to the classroom for the children to explore first hand - unusual plants, flowers, leaves, berries and bugs. In the outdoors, the children have the opportunity to use pond-dipping equipment, moth traps, pitfall traps, insect-catching equipment, binoculars, and spotting scopes (all provided).

Heather also uses a range of materials in the classroom, including slides, bird-song tapes, games and wildlife pictures. Heather has a degree in Zoology and also has many years' experience working in the area of horticulture.

Equipment to find, and look closely at, mini beasts in log piles and moss, butterflies , beetles , mothse, flies, true bugs. Hands-on activity.

Heather will bring water mini-beasts to the school, or, if feasible, class visits water habitat. Hands-on activity.

Introduction to ideas of habitats and looking at school grounds as habitats. Simple habitat mapping and ideas of management for biodiversity. Looking at schoolyard birds.

A hands-on introduction to specialist wetland plants and insects; why wetlands are so important; field trip (if feasible).

A hands-on introduction to pollinators: wild flowers; finding pollen; finding local pollinators; using hand lenses and optical and digital microscope.

A close look at leaf shape; berries and winter buds in the local environment.
