Fred Symmons (aka Forager Fred) is a Senior Environmental Consultant and Ecologist with over 25 years of professional experience in Ireland. Fred runs a busy Environmental Consultancy and is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. He holds an Honours Degree in Environmental Science and is also a Full Member of the Association of Foragers

From a young age, Fred has been fascinated with nature and all things wild, which has grown with him into adulthood and fatherhood. Foraging for wild foods and observing wildlife has become a way of life. In 2016, Fred started his widely acclaimed and popular Facebook Page Blog entitled: Forager Fred’s Wild Food and Nature Blog which now has over 4,000 followers. Through this medium Fred has written hundreds of articles and he shares his passion and wild observations. He runs wildlife and foraging courses all over Ireland.

Fred has taught wildlife, environmental and geography classes and field trips at National Schools for almost 10 years now, where he shares his abundant knowledge with the young children. Fred has helped schools establish various programmes and courses on biodiversity, science and geography. This includes Green Flags for Biodiversity and; establishing outdoor vegetable and wildlife gardens.

Topics he covers include: The importance of Hedgerows; Local Biodiversity and Habitats; Seaside and Beach Ecology; Rockpools; Woodland Nature Walks; Waste and Recycling; Sand Dunes and their importance to Biodiversity; Autumn and Winter Talks – How Nature changes and Adapts; Wild Foods and Poisonous Plants – an awareness of Foraging and How our Ancestors Survived; The importance of Bogs. He develops programmes for the teachers to be able to follow up with homework projects; art projects and further classroom discussions.
