Emma has always been drawn to ecology and the natural world. Often that fascination has been focused through the lens of history. Her training as an anthropologist and archaeologist has enabled her to study human interaction with nature, fuelling her fascination with the ingenuity of past peoples and societies. Emma’s research taught her that traditional knowledge and crafts can inspire whole new ways of thinking and has learned many traditional crafts and foraging skills.

Emma has worked with children in many different roles and she sees outdoor education as key to how we shape our goals and values as a society. She is an experienced interpreter of the past for children and her love for the work bloomed from her time in the education department of the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Since then Emma has become a professional tour guide of National Monuments in the Northwest, participates in citizen science, guides ecology walks on local organic farms and designs day-long children’s events and activities for Heritage Week at the National Monuments where she works.

Having fun, moving around and being outdoors are all excellent ways to commit information to memory. As such, Emma likes to incorporate hands on activities and games into her lesson plans, like weaving a fish trap or experiencing the lifecycle of eels through an elaborate game of tag. She can provide insect and plant specimens, replica artefacts and craft supplies. Given enough notice Emma would be happy to research a school’s region and tailor a day to the history and environment of that locality.
