In this session, pupils will delve into everyday life using visual sources (photographs, maps), documentary sources (official records, newspapers, memoirs) and local history sources (e.g., Dúchas Schools’ Project) to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of what life was like for ordinary people in their area 100 years ago. The session will include familiarization and use of sources (maps, folklore, photographs, etc.) to explore a street or prominent building in the locality.

Teachers will be provided with a workbook for optional follow-up activities.

This theme humanizes people who lived in the past and fosters empathy through the familiar concept of pet ownership. Pupils will learn about famous figures in Irish history from the medieval period to the twentieth century through the pets they owned. The session includes active use and appraisal of sources such as photographs and memoirs.

Teachers will be provided with a workbook for optional follow-up activities.
