Mairéad Stack is a qualified Zoologist with Honours Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees. She also holds a Certificate in Environmental Management. She has worked with the National Parks and Wildlife Service as a Conservation Ranger, with Dublin City Council as its Biodiversity Officer and privately as an Ecologist. Mairéad also worked in Dublin Zoo.
Mairéad has undertaken bat survey training and participates annually in all-Ireland Bat surveys. Mairéad is a Beaver Scout Leader and enjoys bringing children on nature trails and bat walks. She has developed a series of fun, field-based nature classes for primary school children that are linked to the SESE Curriculum.
Topics covered include local and Irish habitats, local biodiversity, pollinators and school pollinator plans, school wildlife plans, what we can do to help wildlife, plastics and environmental care. Sand dune ecology, seashell identification, freshwater pond dipping is also covered and field trips can be facilitated.
Outside learning will be a big part of the programme. Older children will be encouraged to ask questions, formulate their own hypotheses, develop methods of survey and test those methods. Mairéad ’s visits to the school try to mirror the four seasons so children can observe the changes in nature throughout the year. Mairéad has good working Irish and would be happy to give classes through a mix of Gaeilge agus Bearla.

"Mairéad worked with us over five days in May. We had a fabulous time pond dipping, finding bugs and insects in junior and senior infant classes. First class not only engaged with Mairéad in the Dublin Bay in general and specifically Bull Island during the visits she made to the school. We spent a fabulous day out at Bull Island exploring life in the sand dunes and enjoying the environs there. Thank you so much!" - Central Model Infants’ School
