Mairéad Crawford is a naturalist with a special interest in Irish Botany. She graduated from NUI Galway with a Bachelor of Science specialising in botany and plant science in 2013. Since graduating she has expanded her interest in nature to include insects (especially pollinators), Irish mammals and garden birds. She spends her spare time volunteering with various agencies (Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, National Biodiversity Data Centre and Bat Conservation Ireland) to help assess the status of Irelands flora and fauna. She is a co-author and photographer of the “Wildflowers of South Armagh” and regularly gives walks and talks on Irish nature to the general public. She has been an environmental educator for children of all ages since May 2015 and finds this role extremely rewarding.

Mairéad regularly runs events with her recording partner Oisín Duffy (who is also a Heritage in Schools Expert) who has a special interest in the invertebrates of Ireland and they combine their skills for a fun and interactive experience.

On our itinerary you can expect to find plant and insect hunts, bird watching, moth trapping, talks on the butterflies of Ireland, a theme of history and mythology also runs through all of these topics to link them to a human perspective. We deliver this information in an interactive way and each child will get a chance to take part in every activity. We split the class into teams and a quiz runs throughout the day, the winning team will receive a prize. Our programme takes place mostly outdoors with a small indoor session. We are extremely flexible and can include any relevant themes or activities that you or your school would like to cover and can tailor it to your needs and resources.
