Lorraine’s workshop explores the different aspects of our local streams and rivers, through fun, practical activities and engaging discussion. Students will learn about the environmental importance of our freshwater resources, about the types of pollution that threaten them and the effects of pollution on the ecosystems that live within them.

Activities that students undertake give them an opportunity to get their hands dirty and meet some of the fascinating little creatures that dwell on the river beds. Identifying some of the common species, examining some of the features they develop to cope with their surroundings and how they can be used as indictors of pollution, encourages a curiosity and an understanding of life under the water. Students can use their geographical skills to investigate and discuss waterways in their locality, looking at interesting characteristics, historical features, wildlife, pollution and the importance of the waterway within the local community.

The aim of the workshop is to create a greater appreciation and awareness of our precious freshwater resources by encouraging students to explore and investigate using their geographical and scientific skills. The lesson can be based outdoors on a river walk or it can be tailored to suit a classroom environment.
