Ged Dowling has a background in outdoor education and is involved in a variety of outdoor pursuits. Ged and his partner Georgia share a passion for Cultural Astronomy and Night Sky heritage, they formed the Terra-Firma club for Outdoor, strength based learning.
Terra Firma’s programmes are designed to make outdoor learning desirable and accessible for all children. Specialising in place-based learning, outdoor education, and night sky heritage - promoting fun, engagement and excitement in a natural outdoor environment.
We tailor on or off-site visits for schools with the following: outdoor education, cultural astronomy, natural and built heritage.
Our workshops/sessions can take place in a variety of environments, from the school field to local woodlands or sea-shores. Our activities can be tailored for each school visit and often include sessions on natural navigation; using nature’s signposts to help us explore not only what’s under our feet but what we can learn from the night sky above. These sessions can be turned into a multi workshop programme and run over a five week period featuring session content such as:
Night Sky Stories and Science/Astronomy Activities
Learning Knots & Rope Skills
Creative Arts with Natural materials
Scavenger Hunts & Track identification
Hot chocolate & Marshmallows
