Emily is a geologist and master’s graduate in geological hazards. She is a passionate advocate and promoter of Irish Geological Heritage. She believes that while the landscape is beautiful to look at, it is even more beautiful to understand. She wants to connect children to their natural heritage and inspire them by creating awe and wonder of their natural environments through fun, inclusive and hands on learning.
Workshops will typically involve both indoor and outdoor activities but will aim to fully utilize the natural environment near the school such as parks, rivers, coastal or upland areas. Emily’s main aim is to make activities fun and engaging while meeting the requirements of the SESE programme.
A typical workshop would centre around the following themes -
Using her wide collection of rock samples and learning models, Emily will work with the children in identifying rock types, how they formed and make a volcano erupt! The pupils will learn how ancient the rocks in their locality are and go find more!
Emily can teach the pupils how to do basic mapping which can take place in the school grounds or utilising nearby parks giving awareness and knowledge to sense and space.
The ground beneath us - The birds, the bees and me
Emily can show how the nature we see is influenced by the underlying geology and in connecting the pupils to their own environments show with fun examples how rock effects their everyday lives.
Emily’s programme is flexible and is very happy to work with teachers to design a custom workshop to meet any specific needs of the class or pupils. She can in advance make contact with the teacher to arrange any special requirements.
