Colin Ritchie has been building with earth since 2005. He even hand-built his own mud home, which was completed in 2010 and was a runner-up in RTE’s Home of the Year 2015. Colin believes that we can learn a lot from the past about using locally-sourced, natural materials, working with our climate and harnessing our environment to build comfortable, modern homes. In 2012 Colin founded Mud and Wood with his wife, Féile, and since then they have taught 100s of people at home and abroad the art of building with earth.
Colin’s workshops are very hands-on and very mucky! All workshops will be individually tailored to your requirements. Choose from a range of earth building techniques such as mudwall (cob), stone and earth mortar, wattle and daub, mud sculpting and earth plasters. Depending on the length and number of workshops, and the earth building techniques used, it will be possible to build anything from individual models to permanent large-scale structures.
Students will look at different soils and figure whether or not they are suitable for building … and how to modify them if they are not. Ideally, the workshops have the most impact when the earth can be dug out on site by the students. There is something very special about digging up the soil in the morning, mixing it before lunch and building with it in the afternoon! Talk to Colin if this is not an option.
Wellies and old clothes are advisable. Students will get covered in mud!
